Toronto should be SELLING this year, NOT buying. We don't have a single franchise player, and overall a pretty weak core. We should be trying trade proven players for picks/prospects that MIGHT get us the franchise player(s) we need.

It's the choice between going with players proven to give us mediocrity, or take a chance at some picks/prospects, and if they don't turn out, so what, we're still mediocre so we didn't exactly get much worse.
What are the odds that our prospects turn into Weiss, a player that would not only improve the Leafs now, but would be a helpful piece for years to come. Do you really think that management are going to support a full-on fire sale? Has that happened through the last 25 years? 30 years?

While the team has useful pieces, they will attempt to get to the playoffs. In a shortened schedule, without Burke's "Don't get into the 8th spot and get slaughtered" philosophy, Nonis will try to improve the team to make the post-season.

This isn't the best way to go about things, I just think it's the most likely outcome with the current management, ownership and league situation. IMO.
