Point taken on the waiver wire point but while Strait may be the 4th~ best d-man on the Islanders, he isn't a #4 d-man in the NHL. The point is that the defensive depth being cited is illusory for a team that wants to compete, and that it may be unwise to be dismissive of ways to improve the team based on the illusory depth.

The Sharks didn't think enough of Wellwood to offer him a contract the next year, so I am not sure that is a very good counter-example.
