"Overall I feel pretty satisfied with the draft. Selecting Frederik at no 18 was kind of a no brainer. Honestly, we were surprised he was still available at that point.
He is a big center with the right tools to become a really good hockey player and contribute to the Stars organization.", said Modano.

Stars General Manager Mike Modano commented on the off season challenges on a golf course.

"The contract talks with RFA Michael Sauer were terrible. He wanted too much in both term and salary. He has improved tremendously with our team (to 84 ovr) but he has only played a bit over 100 regular season games and was placed on waivers by New York Rangers last spring. I seriously considered not signing him at all and instead let him rot for the season as a qualified RFA since no other teams were interested in him for the salary and term he demanded. However, to my disappointment there was no UFA D-men that I could've signed to replace him. For an example, the contract of Leopold and Regehr, two other defesive defensemen, are ridiculous." (In the end Sauer and Stars agreed to a 3 year deal at 4.930 M)

"We also overpayed Chris Summers for the same reason (2 years at 4.000). I do truly hope and believe they will cash in their paycheques with the level of play that the cheques should require", he added.

Stars' other big re-signings in the off season were RFA Jamie Benn (5.900), UFA Derek Roy (6.000), UFA Brenden Morrow (2.850), UFA Jaromir Jagr (2.600), RFA Brayden Schenn (1.600) and UFA Tom Poti (1.720)

Modano also commented on the signing of Teemu Selanne.

"In mid-August we learned that Teemu decided to play one more year and that he had fully recovered from the injury he suffered last spring. Unfortunately, we were already up to 50 contracts at that time so we had to make room for him (Selanne). The only solution was to trade Fiddler who had some interested from other teams because of his good play in the playoffs last season. So now we have both Selanne and Jagr on the same team. That's really something special and should put some butts in the seats."

But why did you sign the likes of Hecht and Belanger, both injury prone and old, when Fiddler was already on your team?

"In hindsight I messed up. I signed one player too many in July and I signed them because I felt we needed depth, both in the NHL and also in the AHL as we really do not want to ice Ryan Garbutt for more than 10 games per season. I'd also like that the Texas Stars could be more competitive than they were last year. In the end, we really wanted Selanne when he became available in mid-August and we had to make a trade and Fiddler was the only option, as you really can't trade the guys you just acquired, and because Vernon had interest from other teams. When it comes to Hecht and Belanger, they are here, on one year deals, because they are low risk. If they go down, they go down and we just call up Vincour, Chiasson and RosÚn to replace them, that's called depth. We have only about 16 contracts for 2014-2015 so next June we will once again take a look at our team and see which youngsters can step into the NHL and start assemble a team from there, just like this year."

What number will Teemu wear since no. 8 is retired by this franchise?

"You'll have to ask him but my guess is he'll wear number 13."

Loui Eriksson said he considers it an honor to play with a player he grew up idolizing back home in his formative years.

"He's such a great player and he's still producing. It's impressive to see. It's pretty cool to be able to play with him next season. He's such a good player."

Jamie Benn, the Stars' top center, also holds Selanne in high esteem for a number of reasons.

"It's pretty amazing, what he's done over his career and definitely late in his career. Since I got into the League he's still been dominating. He puts up ridiculous numbers at his age and it seems like he can play forever."
