The Islanders and Rangers aren't making a trade. The Islanders acquired the Thomas contract to make them compliant with the floor when they trade off guys in the next 4-6 weeks. Hopefully the NHLPA threatens to file a grievance like they did in the Wade Redden and Scott Gomez situations. The PA didn't like those players being sent home. The PA said it will hurt their future market value. The NHLPA proposed and received the changes they wanted with performance bonuses and the floor. The Islanders trade for contract of a player who isn't not getting paid to reach the floor. Not now. A few weeks from now. The PA can't file a grievance until the Islanders actually reach the floor with the 35 plus Thomas contract. You know its coming.
