The reason why Irving was behind Brust and Taylor in Abbotsford was because he was only signed to a PTO. He, like many other NHLers, would have had to clear waivers to be assigned to the AHL during the lockout. Thus, the Heat signed him to a PTO. The problem with a PTO is that it is only good for 25 games. Even having Irving on the bench would burn a game off the deal. With both Brust and Taylor playing great hockey at the start of the season, there was no need to burn through Irving's PTO. He continued to practice with the Heat, and played in the occasional game. Also, a PTO can only be renewed once.
I hope that clarifies some misconceptions. There was a little more to it other than someone "sucks".
There is also a belief of some that Irving was being 'trained' to be Kipper's backup by only playing 1-2 times a month like he he would in the NHL when Kipper is healthy.
