It depends on what you mean by "the real deal". I don't particularly think we are 1st place in the east material, but I think we're solidly in the four to six range and in a short season with a hot goalie that can be a first in the east or even a first in the league type thing. We have benefited from an easy schedule and a bit of injury luck (but then again this season we have had Subban, Gallagher, Pacioretty and Price all miss games due to health/contract problems).
People forget that last season we lost a significant amount of man-games (and important games like Markov and Gionta) due to injuries and had decreased performances from others for the same reason. Compound that with the management and coaching issues and the media spotlight Montreal is known for an you have a recipe for disaster. This season we are pretty healthy and we've added significant talent replacing Gomez with Galchenyuk, replacing Andrei Kostitsyn with Gallagher, Blunden/Staubitz with Prust and Darche with Armstrong.
