And that's not the only option, they could have kept at least one of the pairings intact, say Edler-Tanev. But now, everyone is playing with someone new against a skilled offensive team. It's not wise.
I don't think it's about the icetime as much as the match-ups. Tanev has played with Hamhuis before in a shutdown role (did so for stretches late last season), so AV must be more comfortable playing the two together in a shutdown role again.
And given that Alberts hasn't played a game this season, they likely want to shelter him and put him on a 3rd pairing they can manage against weaker forward lines, instead of putting Edler in that role and limiting him.
The Wings are a team that you likely want to have a shutdown pairing against, and if you're going to put a shutdown pair together without Bieksa in the lineup, Hamhuis and Tanev make sense given their history and Tanev's safe, low-risk game.
