Holmstrom learned to be a beast in front of the net because that was probably the only way he can have success in the NHL. He was a terrible skater and at times was used as PP specialist who hovers around 15mins of icetime a game. At times he was kind of one dimensional. His skating definitely hurt him.

Surely JVR has much more skill to his game than Holmstrom. I am not saying JVR is already a better player than Holmstrom in his prime, but Holmstrom topped out at 59 pts and was usually around 40ish. I have higher hopes for JVR. He is much faster and has a good shot so he doesn't have to always rely on scoring around the net (though crashing the next is always a good thing, unless Phaneuf is about the unleash one)
