The limited revenue potential of AHL teams ensures that travel costs are a huge expense line item, making west coast re-location for the most part, prohibitive. (Abbotsford BC is an example of a municipal government subsidized exception.)

Los Angeles and San Jose both have east coast AHL affiliates (in fact, not that far from Portland ME), and Vancouver's is in distant Chicago.
