I don't think you're entirely wrong, the average German's English isn't impressive, but I believe it's getting better these days. But there's downside - next time I happen to be abroad people will want to hear the German accent at some point, and as I worked hard to get beyond it as far as possible, I can't really pull it off deliberately any more ...
