They don't work out if your plan is to build your team and structure it around free agents. But if your core and a strong team system are already in place, it makes more sense to go for the missing piece. Chara became a game changer for Boston for that very reason. He was their missing piece.
Perry could definitely be the missing piece for us. I don't see any other pressing need for many years ahead than a big elite right-handed scoring winger. We're in good shape at every other position. And considering Perry's only 27, you know he can grow with that team.
It's not going to be cheap though. I'm guesing 8M over 7Y is going to be the asking price.
