Carry over happens when there is something, anything really, that the former city can hold on to. What could Winnepeg hold dear to their hearts when they became the Coyotes? There was nothing there that reminded them of "their" time.

The jerseys worn the last year before the team moved to Dallas, and especially the logo, remained largely the same.

While there isn't a need or an obligation that franchises should have to pay 'homage' to their history, should they be considerate and keep things largely the same, there is a much better chance that fans from that region will still follow the team, having a distant sense of loyalty.
