IIRC there is no rule forbidding a team from not playing a healthy player. Can put him in the press box for the whole season if they want, just gotta pay him. Now maybe the player could file a complaint with the NHLPA.

Didn't Montreal do that to Gomez? They told him to stay home, until they bought him out or the season was over. And then the NHLPA was concerned that for Gomez being forced to spend an entire year away from hockey would adversely affect his ability to find employment elsewhere in the NHL during the 2013 off-season, so there was a compromise between the NHL and the NHLPA.
