The Texas Rangers were much better at signing/acquiring veteran players who could both bridge the gap until prospects became ready and trading them away for prospects (in most cases). Very few significant trades of veterans brought back other veterans; I actually can't think of a single one off the top of my head similar to this Ryder/Cole trade. They were also much better at developing their young talent into major league players.
