Lemieux and Gretzky both played in the WJC as 17 year olds, Gretzky was younger. Compare their performance. Gretzky 17 points in 6 games, Lemieux, 10 points in 7 games.

Mario Lemieux at 18, last junior season, was much stronger but still not at an NHL level.
