In order to compete seriously, you need the top players, and you need to overpay for them. You need cheap complementary players too. But you can't win without overpaying for top level talent.

I can understand why Habs fans don't want to overpay for players like Brière and Gomez who are small and don't really address our needs directly. I am surprised that people turned against Shanahan when they heard how much he wanted though. He was an ideal fit. A bruising, veteran 40-goal scorer. What more could we ask for?
A 40-goal scorer whose age didn't match his output because we don't know how abruptly he will decline (or suddenly have the wheels come off). If it came to that, I think I would have preferred Recchi to Shanahan.
