In general, nearly all long-term deals are bad for clubs. We know something of this in Van, though I think it can be justified for D men and goalies given the reactive nature of their positions. Forwards must be proactive. Odds are Getzlaf's production will be mid-range not long from now.

I suspect the drop-off trend is even more pronounced for big men.
