O'Neill used to be the most marketable player, but with Staal playing quite well for a teenager, he is probably the biggest market guy.
In two years, if Staal's developement hasn't stalled (sorry, bad pun!!), he will be a great hockey player. If Carolina continues its downward spiral, O'Neill may be the best trade chip they have to build around Staal. I know that O'Neill is young enough as well, but Staal is the franchise. O'Neill could bring in some youth to develop with him or some players that Carolina really needs to make the team better.
With Francis possibly playing in his last season, the Canes may need another playmaking centerman. The Canes could also use some more size/grit on the wing. Aside from Cole, there isn't much of that. Trading O'Neill may bring in some players that can help address these issues because this season looks to be in the tank and next year may not happen. So, it would be best to look forward two years and see what would be best for the club!!
