Schultz was always going to be hated because he was tall but not physical. That's basically all his loudest critics care about. If he doesn't play well, they cite it as an argument in their favor, but it's never the actual reason they're against him. Just like the arguments against Semin were never made in good faith, accurate or not. That said, he's definitely overpaid, and decently slow. He's a competent depth defenseman getting paid like he's something more because he cashed in on that +50 and some attention around the league. Perhaps more important, while whether he does or doesn't hit has almost nothing to do with whether he's a good defenseman, his demeanor and style definitely reflect a major problem area for the team. They're soft, not resilient, easy to play against, etc. If you put Jeff Schultz on a team that didn't have those flaws, his having them wouldn't particularly matter, though.

Considering he's been a healthy scratch under both post-Boudreau coaches, I think if he re-signs (or if not) he's in for a decent cut in pay. I would be fine with keeping him at a lower number, but maybe it's for the best if he goes somewhere where it's not so cool to hate him.
