His injury was probably congenital originally in which case he will always have a high chance of re-injury. Nobody who has back surgery comes back 100%, and if they did it will be short lived as basically everyone's back get worse over time. If this is how he is at his peak he might have a short career. You can't skate or do pretty much anything with a bad back as it supports your entire body. Your shoulder is definitely less important, and depending on what was wrong initially the surgery and recovery times are better.

Last time I checked he was not a pitcher in Toronto.
