What you're not accounting for is that even if no one gets 9mil a year, the 1st line and 2nd line tier players just got a salary hike of around 1mil per year.

While Getzlaf and Perry are clearly more elite than star players... you're paying 7.5-8mil for a star player and 6.5-7.5 for a 1st liner/borderline star.

1st liners will be making 6-7mil on average.

2nd liners will be making 5mil on average very shortly, especially figuring in the Grabovski, O'Reilly signings.

Whether or not more elites come along to the UFA category in the near future... you're still going to be crippled for the next 1-2 years for the top 6 forwards in your lineup if they play hardball. Let alone free agency.

It won't be resolved until we start seeing 8mil return to being ~10% of the cap, which has always been the measurable 'norm' for your best player(s).
