Marian Hossa + Pascal Dupuis for Colby Armstrong, Erik Christensen, Angelo Esposito, and Pittsburgh's 1st-round pick in 2008 (Daultan Leveille).
Armstrong was effective 3rd liner with a goal scoring touch at the time, the kind people are clamoring for in return for Gabby. Espo was a recent middle of the 1st rounder. Crusher a high 2nd who still had some upside at the time. Who the hell is Leveille?

Ilya Kovalchuk + Anssi Salmela + 2nd for Johnny Oduya, Niclas Bergfors, Patrice Cormier, 1st round pick in 2010 + 2nd.

Oduya was a top-4 D, still is depending on who you talk to, similar to a lot of potential "targets" in a Gabby trade. Bergfors a recent 1st rounder. Cormier a recent 2nd with a serious nasty streak, the kind people want included in return for Gabby.

Atlanta traded NJ's 1st (Kevin Hayes) and 2nd (Jeremy Morin) with a bunch of crap to Chicago for Big Buff and a bunch of crap.

It took a unique and monumental screw-up by Tallon in Chicago with his RFA's qualifying offers the previous year for Atlanta to get ONE player of value in return for Hossa and Kovalchuk. Where are the Thrashers now?

These are the kind of returns I see a lot of people proposing for Gaborik on this board and saying it's a great deal for NYR. The main trade board is simply horrible.

NYR are better off gambling on Gabby regaining his scoring touch or replacing Torts like Pitt, LA and NJ did in their winning seasons than trading him for scraps and never will-bes. For every McD there are AT LEAST 5 touted suspects who never pan out. It's A LOT easier to find a competent coach than a 40 goal scorer.

Besides, NYR Sting made a brilliant post last night. It all starts and ends with Richards. You can't win in this league without 2 competent top 6 centers. NYR got knocked out by NJ because Stepan did almost nothing all play-offs and you had post-Neil hit Boyle on 3rd line.

Now you have Richards doing almost nothing, a playoff ? in Stepan, and still a post-Neil hit Boyle on 3rd line. No wingers or top 4 D in this league are gonna make a difference. The only possible return for Gabby that makes sense is a top 6 Center with flexibility to switch to wing when necessary. Like Carter in LA, but obviously NOT him or a player producing as well as him this year. I don't see any available this season.
