I doubt that lack of proper grooming by any of his teams was the main
problem with this player. Most highly talented hockey players fail to make
the NHL. It takes a very special type of person to become a successful
professional athlete.
That having been said, the things that Avtsin seems to lack are mental
and emotional. And he is only 22. Some mental and emotional things can
change a lot quickly. Much more so than physical things.
If this guy figures out what he has to work on in practices, and off the
ice, as well as in games, and discovers the will to do it, he could still become
a good player.
I'm not saying this will happen. But it certainly could. And with his skill
level, and size, that's still worth hoping for.
