The money/ cap hit in Danny's contract isn't the issue. His NMC is. If he could be moved anywhere, you could absolutely get a budget team to take him--his salary is $3 million next year and $2 million the year after. Even if he's a 40 point player, that's good value, and by all indication he has always been a strong lockerroom guy.
To your other point, there are plenty of teams that would love to trade places with the Flyers for the future. Giroux, Voracek, Schenn, Schenn, Simmonds, Couturier--all at or under 25.
Read, Coburn, Talbot, Mezsaros, and Grossmann are all also under 30. Hartnell is 30.
Among regulars, only Timonen, Briere, Fedotenko, Gagne, and Bryz are over 30--and Fedotenko and Gagne are UFAs.
This season has been a massive disappointment, but to say the future is bleak? I don't see it. Our farm system is thin, sure, but that's because the young talent that most teams hope will pan out is already in the NHL.
