The filling of the prime dollar seats has almost nothing to do with casual fan interest and everything to do with the health of the local and both national economies. The obliteration of the neutral zone trap (which I must once again iterate has *nothing* to do with interference - the two are independent concepts!) or the widening of the rink would not make Joe Marketing Officer as likely to take his customers to a game in 2004 than he did in 1998.
We get into an economic state where the people with money feel safe to spend it rather than guard it, and those seats will fill. Whether the teams are playing firewagon hockey or trap, whether the rink is 85 feet wide or 100 feet wide.
