So how did the results turn out?

First - how do things look for the league as a whole? Let's look at the last three seasons' NHL regular season (games through last night), and also the two older seasons that I include lower down in the thread:

 -3 SD-2 SD-1 SD0 SD1 SD2 SD3 SD
NHL 2010-112%6%21%38%28%6%0%
NHL 2011-122%6%21%36%30%5%0%
NHL 2012-131%7%21%35%31%5%0%
NHL 2001-021%6%21%37%28%5%0%
NHL 1984-852%6%21%38%27%6%0%

Pretty consistent from year-to-year. The plurality of games are average. Taking 2012-13, 36% of games are above average, and 29% are below average. On the other hand, it's easier to have a very poor game than it is to have a very great game.

Shall we look at some goaltenders?
