They can't. We don't want Gabby.

Technically we could afford him (if we traded Boyle) but then we wouldn't be able to replace Boyle. It's counter productive, at best we net sum out about the same.

Boyle creates a ton of offense, even when he's not getting points he is integral to the scoring. He is our best player at moving the puck from the defensive zone to the offensive zone, our best player at holding the blue line, and our best pinching defensemen (Burns is close though). Without Boyle, we not only lose his ~50 points, but we likely lose a good chunk of points from the team on top of it. Does Gaborik make up for that? Maybe... But we'd really be better off getting a new #2 first (let Burns take over Boyle's spot and replace Burns, which is less costly).

I don't dislike Gaborik, I just don't really see how it helps us.
