What I like about the moves is they address what I felt was a significant issue for the Blues, which is size. With Kris Russell, Kevin Shattenkirk and even Barret Jackman, the Blues were not a physical team on the back end.

That seemed obvious when they played the Los Angeles Kings, whose big forwards have manhandled the Note in recent meetings, including the playoffs last season. It also was apparent in the number of goal-crease-crashing goals the team was giving up.
Bouwmeester's crease-clearing physicality is how the Blues addressed their significant size issue on the backend, per Dan. We can say a lot of things about this deal but Russell is more physical. Bouwmeester's entire game is avoiding contact and skating away from it. If the point was to counter LA's physicality with Blues physicality, this move is the diametric opposite of that. Hell, it was the diametric opposite when the Blues chose Leopold over Regehr.
