I freaking love the idea of Gaudreau on our team. I think very very highly of him. I don't think he's the next Martin St. Louis or the next Theo Fleury especially based on playing styles, but this kid is a steal of a draft pick and going to be something special, if not outstanding.
But he's not a lock to make it to the NHL.
Why not take the chance to package him and one of Calgary's picks (likely Calgary's 3rd in 2013) for another young, talented player who has already played in the NHL?
I am not saying that it's going to be an easy trade to make. I'm not saying there's a team or a GM out there who's willing to do it. I'm not even saying that I want to see Gaudreau in anything but Flames colours in 5 years from now.
What I am saying though, is that Calgary needs to assess the risk level of their players. I'm saying that at this point, Calgary needs a better guarantee. Trade while potential and attention level is high. Get a fantastic return. A player like Conacher or Tarasenko-level of youth and skill, who thinks that Gaudreau is even better than their player who has reached the NHL and can afford to take the risk of him possibly not developing properly when Calgary can't afford the risk.
It's just an idea, and not a well-formed one at that. But I just want to see people's opinions on this.
Unless we are getting an unreal player back or a top 5 pick in this draft, I would hang onto him.
