Desharnais is a below average defensive player. I really don't think there's any disputing that without resorting to using specific plays to try and draw a generalization.

This isn't a problem in itself, as he's not the only poor defensive center in the NHL, and his effort is always there. It does mean, in my opinion, that Desharnais is more expendible as a center at least than Plekanec and Eller because there's less situations he is valuable in.

But Desharnais is an asset as long as coaches use him properly. He shouldn't be playing much in his own zone and shouldn't be expected to shut down top tier centers.

And quite frankly, neither DD or Eller should be playing against the Girouxs and Crosbys of the league on every shift. If you have to match up one against top lines, it's Eller, but don't be surprised when he makes a few mistakes against elite competition.
