doing a rewatch of the first season of Mad Men and i noticed something disconcerting. in episode six of the first season near the 36:00 minute mark Joan says "Well, you know what they say: the medium is the message."

that well-known phrase was coined by media theorist Marshall McLuhan and i don't believe it became part of the public lexicon until the publication and wide success of his book, Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man in 1964. however, all reports indicate that he first season of Mad Men takes place in 1960. is this an anachronistic error or perhaps a wink-n-a-nod moment of prescience for Joan? i doubt it's the later as to my knowledge she shows no proclivity for media studies, unlike say Harry Crane.

it's deeply troubling and i don't know if i'll ever be able to look past this. next week i'll be sure to double check all the chemical reactions scribbled on the whiteboard in Walter White's classroom.
