Wow, I'm an Oilers fan and even I have to come to the defense of the Flames! Your line of reasoning is absolutely ridiculous.. "The Flames might make the playoffs but they won't go anywhere.. they should trade away their best player for picks so they can win in the future". Based on this theory, every season the Flames get close to cracking the playoffs they should trade away their proven players and improve their prospect base.. you propose an essentially never-ending cycle! It is ridiculous for you to assume that a small market team like Calgary should trade away their franchise player for crap (yes, I consider a deal for Iginla with Steen as the key return crap) just because they might not advance to the finals. Just making the playoffs is a great accomplishment for a cash-strapped team like Calgary or Edmonton and the added playoff revenue definitely helps keep some players around in the offseason. It sounds to me like you just want to acquire Iginla at a bare-bones price..
