Yes, there obviously still are waivers. I think you're mixing up "waivers" with the "waiver draft." There is no longer a waiver draft, where we have to protect a certain number of players each year.
But to send a guy down to the AHL, once they reach a certain age / number of games played, etc., they still have to clear waivers. You can also put a player on waivers without sending them down.
And there is no point in doing this now. If Lapierre or Chipchura outplay Bonk in camp, *perhaps* management will consider it. You don't want to "leave" a spot for them. You want them to earn it.
