I felt like in their minds offensive production = leadership. Sometimes this is the case because without a doubt leading your team on the ice is important, but that doesn't necessarily mean you can lead off the ice as well. As far as the top 10 scorers in the league goes 4 are captains. I'd actually be really interested in knowing how many captains lead their teams in points, but I'm too lazy to look right now

I also think it's hard for a young player to be thrust into a prominent role like that. Some can handle it really well, like Crosby and Toews, and others not so much.
