Morin ascends rapidly:
Samuel Morin (D, 2013), Rimouski

Made startling progress through his second QMJHL campaign, culminating in a breakout playoff performance – tying for second in team scoring (6-1-6-7) .. led Rimouski with 117 penalty minutes in the regular season .. former seventh-overall pick in the 2011 QMJHL Midget Draft .. a mean, hulking defender .. smooth and agile with striking fluidity and stride balance for such a large man – and bolstered by massive extremities .. acceleration speed and top gear improved significantly over the course of the season .. must keep upgrading his quickness in stops, starts, and reversals .. transitions fluidly from back to front and can initiate the breakout with a solid first pass .. his poise and decision-making as a puck-mover have matured exponentially this season .. making softer plays with the puck, and showing better vision of the ice .. received increasing power-play time thanks to a booming point shot .. unrefined as a shooter – rushes plays, head down at times, albeit shows a knack for getting to the net and into advanced positions .. needs to upgrade his overall physical consistency .. injects bursts of physical nastiness – like jabbing opponents with his stick – and will suddenly unload a ferocious finishing check .. can get quite reckless .. will be a strapping mountain once matured .. projects as a suffocating defender if his game can develop a solid ‘defense-first’ foundation .. quite reactive in his own end – chases plays and doesn’t appear to sense the game all that instinctively .. upgrading his stick-work is imperative – striving to protect passing lanes better – particularly in dangerous areas .. routinely, almost innately, drifts forward toward the heart of the action – and right past it at times .. his 1-on-1 play and his overall positioning and gap control will all need significant development time .. gets beaten trying to stand up against the rush .. takes poor angles and gets wrong-footed by shifty opponents .. what he misses in experience and raw instincts however, he makes up for in size, mobility and a Chara-like spread .. sucks in pucks from defensive situations like an octopus.
