He loves to pass when he is not scoring because he does not want the puck. He needs a lucky goal or two because at this point, he is feeling so much pressure he could explode. This will compound - - squeezing the stick...quarter step behind...don't make a mistake... and dying to pass. He gets in the mode of "please don't give me the puck..."
