I don't believe this is true. Price has always been a butterfly goalie and I don't think Melanson either enforced or tried to change this. What I remember hearing is that he wanted Carey to use his size advantage to stay deeper in his net rather than challenge shooters as aggressively as some goalies.

I don't agree with that approach, but considering the numbers that Huet, Price, and Halak posted under him, along with the success of Vancouver's goalies, it's hard to say he's terrible at his job.
