I came here to post Kovalev's name since it was the first one that popped into my head. Definitely underacheived in his career, no doubt. Still hard to believe he had that many points though, playing 20 years helps I guess.

Two players also come to mind. Jason Arnott has 938 points. Never more than 76 in a season. Not sure if he'll get to 1000, but he's close. Scott Stevens had over 900 points in his career if you can believe it.
Stevens was quite the offensive dman back in his days as a Cap. He became known as the big hitting machine he is with the Devils.
