Part of it comes with the Canadian obsession with hockey. The writers could never make the NHL, so this is their way of placing themselves into the game; they make themselves the story. It's the basic framework for lots of these fellows writing hockey in general. They want to be part of the game, and when things don't go their way, they're some of the most spoiled journalists in the business.
