I'll try to weigh in here, as I have been suffering for years with the same problem. Herniated discs are very temperamental. You got two options, rest and wait - the approach I was given to take - which can either heal within a year or just not heal (unfortunately for me, I've had it for like 6 years now); or surgery where they just shave off the part of the disc that has been displaced.

They say though, once you have them, you get them often and the risk of it reoccurring after surgery is high, especially for athletes or physically active individuals. The recovery time for a surgery isn't very long because it doesn't impact the muscles or his strength, and one should feel a lot better - surgery doesn't take very long.

There's no complications when it comes to this surgery, it's simply a concern of it reoccurring.
