Was at the game last night. Overall impressed by their effort and play. Ottawa put up a lot of shots but many were just weak perimeter shots.
Mason played great. His athleticism was very noticeable and he saved a couple of goals just based on his quick reflexes alone. Rebound control was his biggest fault by far. A lot of nothing outside shots ended up as juicy rebounds in front of the net.
Hartnell and Giroux seemed to have packed it in for that game. A lot of sauntering around with the odd burst of energy but rather lazy play when the puck wasn't near them. Voracek played a strong game though. Nice to see Knuble play for what will probably be his last game.
The defense played surprisingly well. I was quite impressed with Lauridsen, made a great move to stop a 2 on 1 and played a strong game (other than the sequence were he lost his stick and then fell back into Mason. His movements without his stick reminded me of:
But outside that sequence he had a good game.
It was nice to see Akeson get his start in front of his hometown. Even saw one fan wearing an Ottawa 67's Akeson jersey (which was actually quite odd since he played for the Kitchener Rangers, maybe it was a Jeremy Akeson jersey?). He was the first one out on the ice for the pregame skate and had the biggest sh**-eating grin on his face, he was so excitied.
