Also, a massive part of their low prices is that they are powerful enough to undercut wholesale prices. An example I've often heard is Wrigley. Walmart tells them, "we want to sell your gum for 5c less than everyone per pack, so we're going to pay 8c less than everyone else. Take it or leave it." And no one ever leaves it.
