IF, and that's a big if, he begins to under-perform, dump him, the cap will be so high by then that a 1 mil penalty will be almost irrelevant.

Buy outs aren't just a word. The owners of the team will actually have to pay out contract. At once. That's a lot of money, I don't believe any businessman would want to cut a check the equivalent of multiple seasons of salary just to tell him to take a hike? Especially when its a goalie who in theory, is young and good enough that he could still come back and bit your team in the playoffs or something sometime. Its a better move for the Canucks to give away picks with Lou to get him off the books rather than buy him out.
