why do some people always focus on the offensive side of things when evaluating defensive minded defensemen?

the canucks have no cap room. tanev is a steady, solid, reliable d-man that has tremendous upside. it's just my opinion that gillis needs to sign him now or else he'll be targeted, especially since the compensation for his anticipated salary bracket is a second rounder only.
