I'm not a fan of this deal. I've liked Niinimaa in the past, but based on his recent years, he is not good enough to crack Montreal's top six.
Further, I see Ribeiro as being a consistent 55-65 point producer. I don't see a replacement for him in the Montreal system right now. Yes, I like Plekanec more. But Koivu does get injured. When he gets injured, Plekanec can step into Koivu's role, but then who's the second line C? Bonk? I don't like it.
Bottom line:
Niinimaa's overpaid and doesn't offer Montreal much at the moment.
Montreal dealt from a position of weakness for a position of relative weakness due to injuries.
On the bright side, this means Perezhogin, Latendresse and Garth Murray can be playing right now.
Or, we'll see Kostitsyn back up. But I like to think Murray's earned his spot on this team.
