In their primes, they were seeing far more SHTOI than Kovalchuk ever has. Now, Detroit simply has PK specialists that they can rely upon so they don't have to put Datsyuk and Zetterberg in that spot.

You can try and bend the stats all you like. It still doesn't make him an elite pker, or the best pking forward in the league, or the most efficient one.
I'm not talking overall defensive play, but rather strictly PKing abiltiies. Pavel Datsyuk has never averaged over 2 min SHTOI/PG despite being a multiple time Selke Winner. Zetterberg only twice in his 11 seasons averaged over 2 mins SHTOI/PG. Rarely are team's top offensive players play on the PK, despite being the best defensive players. Kovalchuk proved since going to New Jersey and playing in a well-run system has statistically been one of the best PKing forwards in the league. It's not bending stats at all, but merely stating facts. Aside from 2003-04, he has never been given a chance to PK with the Thashers. Even best defensive players don't engage in a lot of SH TOI/PG like Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Karlsson ,etc.
