For me I notice a difference after about 3-4 weeks. That's when my legs get stronger and recovery on the bench is better.
Some kind of interval work seems to be best. Start with 15-20 seconds of work then rest for a minute. Do that for 10-15 minutes if you can. Over time try to get up to 30 seconds of work and 30-60 seconds of rest.
You can do sprints and then walk, ride a bike and go between super fast and slow, or what I do is kettlebell swings. That works the legs pretty well and you can do it at home.
