I think the best the Bruins could do would be to recoup a franchise forward and get additional pieces for Joe Thornton.

If you're trading Joe Thornton, you're giving up on a franchise talent at center, and those are exceedingly rare. It would be a good idea to pick up someone like Lecavalier in a big trade, and maybe add a couple of guys like Kubina or Svitov, or other pieces in a 3 way trade.

That way, you get another shot at working with a (potential) franchise player, and additional pieces to build with around your new centerpiece. It will improve the overall depth of the franchise, and then you can fill in needs by trading from excess or by going after free agents, although the Bruins probably won't do that.

Trading for need like getting an Ohlund might not be the best way to go. It will definitely improve the blueline, but it's not like a Shanahan for Pronger kind of scenario where you get a building block for 15+ years. Getting guys like Morrison and other throw ins isn't that appealing because you end up surrendering a franchise player for quantity.
