New Look Hurricanes Still Going Strong
December 12, 2019
GM Grind Jam Grind had a bit of a rough patch during the offseason, getting into some cap trouble, and was forced to trade, among others, long-time 2nd line center Jordan Staal. Staal was not the only forward the Canes parted with, also being forced to let All-Star Winger Patrick Kane go. Rookies and more experienced young guns were forced to carry the workload, and so far, they have not disappointed.
The Hurricanes are currently 19-9-3.
Rookie Morgan Kilmchuk, the Hurricanes' 2013, 23rd overall pick, is currently centering the 2nd line and is the team leader in goals with 13. Not far behind in the goal race are James Neal and Logan Couture.
Nail Yakupov, who signed a new deal in the summer that will pay him close to $11 million per season is in the team lead in points with 28 in 31 games.
The Canes are in the top 10 in GF, GA, PP, and PK.
Jeff Skinner (SNP 89) - Logan Couture (PLY 89) - Nail Yakupov (SNP 90)
Jessey Astels (GRN 82)* - Morgan Klimchuk (SNP 82) - James Neal (PWF 85)
Dustin Jeffrey (TWF 80) - Oscar Lindberg (TWF 81) - D. Smith-Pelly (PWF 80)
Cody Almond (GRN 76) - Brad Malone (TWF 78) - Alex Chiasson (PWF 78)
Jake Gardiner (TWD 88) - Seth Jones (TWD 90)
Jarrod Fedoruk (DFD 82)** - Aaron Ekblad (TWD 85)
Joonas Valkonen (DFD 83)*** - Connor Murphy (TWD 82)
Steven Veilleux (HYB 88)
Jacob Blair (HYB 81)
* - Astels- 2013, 100th overall, 3.5 yellow stars
** - Fedoruk - 6 foot 8, 2018 32nd overall pick. Good value and he's ready for the NHL a lot earlier than others. 3.5 yellow
***- Valkonen - 2013, 38th overall. 3.5 yellow stars
(I recommend getting as many 2013 draft picks as you possibly can. By far the deepest draft there is and you can basically make a whole new team out of it.)
LW Harry Winchester 73 OV, 21 years, 4.5 yellow
LW Hunter Shinkaruk 79 OV, 25 years, 4.5 yellow
C Connor McDavid 76 OV, 22 years, 4.5 yellow
D Christopher Harper 72 OV, 20 years, 4 green
D Darnell Nurse 80 OV, 24 years, 4 yellow
And then a bunch of guys with 3.5 yellow stars
Suggestion: Bundle the guys picked in the low rounds, with not much potential (2.5 or less stars,) into trades. You can get a 3rd round pick for a bunch of dead weight, basically. And it keeps the reserve list cleaner. I had too many prospects at one point.
