Playoff Push 2022
Canes fans weren't expecting much from their team in their series against the Lightning, but the Canes quickly discarded the Bolts in 5 games. Jeff Skinner and Leon Draisaitl both had 5 points. McDavid chipped in with 4. Even 4th liners Brandon Mashinter and Matt Kennedy managed to get on the board.
The Canes will face another division rival, the Washington Capitals, next.
Like the previous series, the Canes were able to win against the Caps in 5 games. The Canes won all 3 away games. Nail Yakupov leads in points with 9, and Leon Draisaitl has 8. This has been a total team effort so far, with everyone in the top 6, bottom 6, and defense chipping in. Steven Veilleux has a .944 sv% and a 1.64 GAA. He will face goaltender James Reimer in the next series, when the Canes take on the Maple Leafs in ECF. James Reimer has also put up excellent numbers.
A 7 game ECF series, with the Canes advancing. Who would have thought this would happen when the Canes seemed destined for the 1st overall pick just a few months ago? The Canes overcame a 3-2 series deficit to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs. The 7th game was certainly...unusual, with the Canes winning 7-4.
Jeff Skinner leads with 14 points in 17 games. Draisaitl, Shinkaruk, and Couture each have 13. Yakupov with 12, and McDavid with 10. In some surprising news, the 4th liners have certainly been pulling their weight. Andrei Kuleshov has 7 points, Matt Kennedy has 6 points, and Brandon Mashinter has 5, which is even more surprising considering that there is no natural center on this line. Kuleshov has been amazing on faceoffs.
A bit of nostalgia for the older generation of Canes fans, as their beloved team will face the Edmonton Oilers in the Stanley Cup Finals.
Stanley Cup Finals
It certainly kept the fans in Raleigh on the edge of their seats. The Canes took a commanding 3-1 lead in the series. They thought it would be time to celebrate soon. But Edmonton came back strong, winning two sudden death overtime games to stay alive. And so the series headed back to Edmonton for a game 7. But here, the Hurricanes gathered themselves, and, excuse the language, took a collective **** on the Oilers. Before the first period was over, the Canes were already leading 4-1. The Edmonton crowd was stunned. Jeff Skinner scored early, and Aaron Ekblad added two more. (He ended up with the Cup-clinching goal) As the clock was counting down, the Oil faithful cheered one more time for their team, who had also made the SCF as a 5th seed. But the Hurricanes cheered even louder, and celebrated their second Cup in as many years!
Logan Couture and Jeff Skinner each finished with 19 points in 24 games.
4th liner Brandon Mashinter retired on top.
